10 Signs Your Wix Website Needs Some TLC (And How to Spot Them)

Your website is like a diligent little digital salesperson for your business. It’s often the first impression potential clients have of you, and within just a few seconds they’ll decide whether to stick around or click away.
The challenge? Sometimes your digital salesperson gets a bit rusty and needs some TLC. Many small business owners DIY their Wix website themselves, which is great for getting online quickly and affordably. But over time, little design flaws, technical hiccups, and user experience issues start to creep in. These “minor” problems add up and can eventually cost you enquiries, bookings, and sales.
It’s not only potential clients that aren’t happy with these issues, it can also affect your SEO and how Google views the usefulness of your site. If you’ve been wondering whether your site needs some TLC, here are 10 signs your Wix website needs a fix — plus what you can do about them.
1. Your site looks great on desktop, but it’s a mess on mobile
I get it, it’s so much easier to design on your desktop without having to worry about how it looks on mobile. And sometimes you make quick updates and forget about the mobile view tab (been there, done that!) But, with more than 70% of people browsing the web on their phones, a mobile-friendly website is so important.
On Wix it’s not too hard to optimise for mobile. However, each time you make changes on a page in desktop view, it seems to throw something out of whack on mobile view. It’s common for text to look squished, headings to look gigantic, images to overlap, extra large spaces to appear, or buttons to become too small to tap on mobile. Whilst not all of those design issues will affect people being able to get the information they need, it can make you look unprofessional.
👉 Quick check: Open your site on your phone and look around. Is it easy to read and click, or do you have to pinch and zoom? Can you access and read the menu items? Can you fill out the contact form?
2. Slow site speed and load times
Speed matters more than most business owners realise. You might not even notice the slowness yourself (because your site is cached on your browser), but new visitors definitely will. If your site takes too long to load people will start to click away. A slow site doesn’t just annoy visitors, it can also hurt your search engine rankings.
On Wix, slow load times are often caused by videos set to autoplay, too many plugins (Wix Apps), too many animations or too many ads (you don’t need to worry about image compression for your Wix site as the website builder will automatically optimise your images for you).
👉 Quick check: Your Wix dashboard has a site speed monitor. Make a habit of regularly reviewing your site speed, especially after you have made big updates to your site. If your scores are poor, it’s time to fix it.

3. Visitors get confused navigating your site
People visit your site for a reason. If they can’t find what they are looking for they end up frustrated and may leave. If it’s hard to follow, cluttered with too many dropdowns, or missing important pages, your visitors won’t know where to go next. And if people can’t find the information they need quickly, they’ll simply leave.
A clean, simple menu with intuitive labels (“Home”, “About”, “Services”, “Contact”) makes it easy for people to browse. Grouping related pages under a single heading also helps (e.g. your various services). Also be mindful of how wide your menu is. Often any extra menu items will be listed as “more” or appear on a second menu line. This is neither neat nor user-friendly.
👉 Quick check: Pretend you’re a brand-new visitor. Can you find your services and contact details within 3 clicks? If not, your menu needs a tidy-up.
4. Inconsistent fonts and colours
Visual consistency not only is aesthetically pleasing, it also builds trust. Sometimes DIY sites don’t get set up correctly using the font and colour theme editor, so each time the site is added to a different paragraph font of heading style appears. This can also easily happen with buttons and you end up with multiple mismatched button styles. In Wix, sometimes fonts also get caught up when you copy and paste your updates from a Word document. In this way, many DIY sites end up with too many fonts, random colours, or mismatched branding elements. Instead of looking polished and professional, your site starts to look pieced together.
👉 Quick check: Scroll through your site. Are your headings, body text, and buttons all consistent? Or does it look like a patchwork of styles? If it’s the latter, a style refresh will make a huge difference.
5. Broken links and missing buttons
Few things are more frustrating than clicking a link and landing on a “404 error” page — or tapping a button that doesn’t go anywhere. Broken links instantly damage credibility and can lose you a potential customer who was ready to book.
This often happens when you create a button but forget to link it, rename a page without updating links, or connect social icons that aren’t set up (in Wix, the social icons default to Wix's social media pages). It’s easy to overlook, but to visitors it looks sloppy.
👉 Quick check: Go through your site as if you were a customer — test every menu link, button, and icon. If any don’t work as expected, fix them immediately.
6. Cluttered or overwhelming homepage
Your homepage is the digital “welcome mat” to your business. If it’s overloaded with text, too many images, or competing calls-to-action, visitors won’t know where to focus — and they’ll leave instead of engaging.
A strong homepage should clearly communicate what you do, who you help, and how people can work with you. It should also guide visitors to the next step: book, enquire, or learn more. White space, clear headings, and simple design are your best friends here.
👉 Quick check: Ask a friend to look at your homepage for just 5 seconds. Can they tell what you do and how to take the next step? If not, your homepage may need a declutter.
Pro Tip: I often recommend clients to look at Donald Miller’s material for a strategic overview of what to include on your homepage. He has a set of short videos here, summarised here.
7. Poor readability
Tiny fonts, dark text on dark backgrounds, and long walls of text all make your site difficult to read. And if visitors have to squint or scroll endlessly to get the gist, they won’t stay.
Readability isn’t just about font choice — it’s about spacing, line height, and contrast. Good readability makes your content inviting, while poor readability makes your site feel amateur.
👉 Quick check: Look at your site. Is the text large enough to read comfortably? Are paragraphs short and scannable? If not, adjust your design for better readability.
Pro Tip: Your Wix site has an Accessibility Wizard you can use to check on all accessibility features, including contrast and text size. Go to your site editor, click Settings in the top navigation bar and you’ll find Accessibility Wizard in the dropdown.
8. Incorrect use of H1 tags
This is one I see quite often. For SEO is it vital that each page on your site has one, and only one, heading that is tagged H1. This is the one that tells the search engine what the page is about.
In Wix, the H1 tag is automatically associated with the Heading 1 design style. Sometimes people like to use the Heading 1 design style for multiple points on the one page, which can result in multiple H1 tags on the page.
👉 Quick check: You can manually check your site by going to each page and looking at each heading. If you have an SEO tool you use, H1 tags will be one of the things it checks for.
9. Missing SEO basics
As well as H1, common SEO basics often overlooked on Wix include missing page titles and meta descriptions, images without alt text, and incorrect heading hierarchy. The good news? These fixes are relatively quick, but they can have a big impact on your visibility.
👉 Quick check: Hover over your browser tab. Does it display a clear page title (e.g. “Blueberry Digital | Wix Web Design”), or does it just say “Home”? If it’s the latter, your SEO needs attention.
Pro Tip: Your Wix dashboard has an SEO Setup Checklist. It’s visible when you first start your site, but can be found later by going to Site & Mobile App> Website & SEO> SEO & GEO.
10. No clear call-to-actions (CTAs)
Your website should always guide visitors toward the next step. Whether it’s booking a consultation, buying a product, or signing up for a newsletter, clear CTAs make the journey simple. Without them, visitors leave without taking action.
Every page should have at least one obvious button or link directing people where you want them to go. “Book Now”, “Get in Touch”, or “Start Here” are all examples of effective CTAs. Without these, you’re leaving potential business on the table.
👉 Quick check: Look at each page of your site. Is there an obvious action for visitors to take? If not, add a clear CTA button.
Why Fixing These Issues Matters
A website that feels clunky, messy, or unprofessional doesn’t just frustrate you — it frustrates your potential clients. And frustration = lost business.
